Innovative lithium extraction from geothermal brines and discoveries of deep-sea polymetallic nodules offer new sources of lithium and green energy.

New technologies are unlocking sustainable lithium extraction methods. A direct lithium extraction (DLE) process, developed by Alma Energy and the University of Texas, uses electrodialysis to separate lithium from geothermal brines, producing battery-grade lithium, green hydrogen, and fresh water. This method leverages existing oil and gas infrastructure, reducing environmental impact and costs. Meanwhile, researchers have discovered deep-sea polymetallic nodules that generate oxygen at depths of up to 13,000 ft. These nodules are rich in lithium and other rare metals, sparking interest in deep-sea mining, although environmental concerns remain.
