Italy explores new opportunities in lithium extraction from geothermal brine with an eye on sustainability and technological advancement.
In July 2024, the Italian Ministry of Environment and Energy Security (MASE) organized a strategic workshop in Rome titled “Extraction of Lithium from Geothermal Brine: Potential and Future Challenges.” The event brought together key players from companies like ENEL Green Power and research institutions such as the National Research Council (CNR). Discussions revolved around the legal framework, following the European Regulation on Critical Raw Materials, and technological advancements in lithium extraction from geothermal brines. The integration of this extraction process with geothermal energy production was highlighted as crucial for Italy's energy transition, offering sustainable solutions for the automotive industry and a broader circular economy.
