Under the motto "Lithium extraction from geothermal brines: What are the market requirements for lithium-ion batteries?", the 2nd UnLimited Workshop took place last Thursday (15.06.2023) as a side event of TSEE Munich.

During the workshop, six participants from industry and R&D gave insights into the technical approaches of lithium extraction up to the processing of the produced lithium products for use in lithium-ion batteries.

The event opened with an overview of the situation of battery raw materials and the development of the lithium market and then focused on the current activities of geothermal lithium extraction in the Upper Rhine Graben. The first results of various pilot projects were presented and the adaptability of already technically mature DLE units, such as those used in the South American salt lakes, was discussed.

At the end of the workshop, the requirements of the battery sector for lithium products were discussed and the topic of recycling was addressed. In direct exchange with the approximately 20 participants, the event was characterised by a fruitful discussion.
