In the UnLimited joint project, KIT is investigating not only manganese oxides but also other sorbents on a laboratory scale regarding direct lithium extraction from geothermal water. In this context, lithium iron phosphates LFP (LiFePO4) have been intensively tested in the laboratory and recently successfully applied.

"We are pleased to announce that we were able to successfully extract lithium from Bruchsal geothermal brine for the first time using LFP at KIT," informs Rebekka Reich, staff member of the Chair for Geochemistry and Economic Geology at the KIT Institute of Applied Geosciences. Further details will be published in the coming months.
