Lithium represents one of the key components for current lithium-ion batteries. These batteries are crucial for the storage of renewable energies and for the ambitious plans for the electrification of the transport sector.

Due to the emerging supply and demand developments, lithium could be one of the limiting factors in this development away from the pure combustion engine towards battery electric vehicles.

Against this background, the German Mineral Resources Agency (DERA) held an industry workshop on lithium as a raw material at the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) on June 23, 2022.

In addition to speakers from SQM International N.V. and AMG Lithium GmbH, Dr. Thomas Kölbel from EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg AG was also present with the UnLimited project and his ideas of unconventional lithium extraction from deep geothermal brines.
